(How I actually end up using this site, however, remains to be seen; it might evolve in a different direction.) Here I’m sharing some of the steps I did to set up this site in case anyone finds it helpful.

I started with an account on Web Hosting Hub to register the domain and upload files. Web Hosting Hub is affordable and has a lot of tools that are easy to install and get going, but the connections tend to be a bit slower than I like. After logging in, I used cPanel to install WordPress. WordPress has a lot of tools being developed to quickly put together a site with a wide range of customizable functionality. I have the minimalist Twenty Twenty-Three theme activated to get started.

Within WordPress, I installed and activated the essentially default Akismet Anti-Spam and Jetpack plugins. I also installed the “Conditionally display featured image on singular pages and posts” plugin to enable featured images on the links to posts but disable them at the top of the post itself. (I like being able to use them on the main page but did not like the large shaded image at the top of the post). I also installed “Easy SVG Support” to be able to use SVG image files on the site, like the WordPress logo at the top of this post. Then I installed WP QuickLaTeX for rendering.

Finally, I added this to the “Additional CSS”.

/* set page background color */
body {
 background-color: #FAF2CC;
}

This changes the background page color to have less contrast with the text, which makes it easier for me to read. (There is evidence that this is helpful for people with dyslexia.)

/* change the font size of image captions */
.wp-block-image figcaption {
font-size: 15px;
}

This makes the font size of the figure captions slightly smaller than the regular text, so it is easy to separate them visually.

/* change color of post comment button */
.wp-element-button {
 background-color: #f5a742;
}

The “Post Comment” button at the bottom of the page was a bright lime green. This makes it less garish against the background color.

At the moment, that’s it. This site is still at its earliest stages, and I have more changes and adjustments to make. I may add updates if I make any additional substantive changes.

Links and reference

A website hosting company, Web Hosting Hub, https://www.webhostinghub.com/

A Wikipedia article about WordPress, the software behind this site, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WordPress

A Wikipedia article about the Latex document system, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaTeX

Information related to the background color; Rello, L., & Baeza-Yates, R.
